CHANGED ASPECT ON EASTERN FRONT
GREAT OFFENSIVE IN GALICIA
RUSSIANS' STRIKING POWER .GREATLY INCREASED
(Received January 3, 10 a.m.) * , LONDON, 2nd January. The Observer's Petrograd correspondent states that last week a changed aspect came over the Russian front. The front from the Pripet to Galicia- and the Dvina front" suddenly blazed into tierce activity. The previous inactivity has greatly increased the Russians' striking power. The new troops are a fine type of soldier, and ammunition is plentiful. •The Russian military authorities estimate that tho Austro-Germans from the Pripet to Rumania number a million and a-half. So far the Russians have had the advantage. AUSTRIAN LINE SMASHED BY RUSSIANS. PARIS, Ist- January. The iTomps says the most violent battle is raging in Eastern Galicia. The Russians havo succeeded in smashing tho Austrian line and forcing yon Bothmer to retreat on certain /'sections of that front. PETROGRAD, Ist January. Official.—There have been desperate engagements south of the Pripet region. FURTHER RUSSIAN SUCCESSES. (Received January 3, 8.25 a.m.) PETROGRAD, 2nd January. A communique states: Desperate counter-attacks by the enemy, with"the object of driving us back on the right bank of the Styr, were unsuccessful. Two miles of enemy trenches on the River Strypa were occupied. We broke through the enemy entanglements and consolidated .the. ground won We crossed the Styr in the Chartorysk region, and captured the village of Khriasi, despite the futile counter-attacks which followed. We drove back the enemy in the Ussetchko district to the right bank of the Dniester, and have mado progress between the Dniester and the Rumanian frontier.
