HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE REPORTED
WORST TRAGEDY SINCE THE LUSITANIA

LONDON, Ist January, 1.55 p.m. The High Commissioner reports:—The P. and O. liner Persia (7974 tons) has been sunk. sTlie majority of those on board were lost. The Persia was torpedoed off Crete. . • . LONDON, Ist January. The Persia was bound for Bombay, and was sunk on Thursday. Most of the passengers and crew have heen lost. The passenger list shows eighty-seven women and twenty-five children, tlje total being 231, including Colonel Lord John Montagu. AMERICA STUNNED BY NEWS. s LONDON, Ist January. It is reported in Washington that the Persia was torpedoed while approaching Alexandria. The nevis has stunned America, in view of the settlement of the Ancona incident.
