TO-DAY'S SITTING.
[ Major H. F. Davis, J.P., presided -at I to-day's sitting cf the Magistrate's Court. The greater number of offenders appeared to answer charges of insobriety on New Year's Day. Ton first offenders, of. whom three were soldiers, wore dealt with in the usual way, the uniformed mon. being handed over to tho military authorities. Joseph Georgeson, Martin Joyce, ajid Patrick Butler were fined ss, and Ernest Cox _10s. John Hyde, who had several previous convictions against his name, was handed over to the military authorities, the presiding Justice remarking that he was a disgrace to the forces. Another eoldier, Hena-y Edgar Ada/ison, was remanded for-seven days on -a charge of helpless drunkenness.. Remands were also granted in the oases' of Horace Graham R-utter, helpless drunkenness, and Geo. Murray, being in possession of liquor while prohibited. Wm. Boyle Greeaaway, on charges of drunkenness and using obscene language, \vas handed over to the military authorities. For similar offences John Price, a civilian, was convicted and discharged on the minor charge and fined £5, mi defnult one months' imprisonment, for [ obscenity. i Insobriety and an assault on Constablo. Richards were the offences which Robert M'Farlane admitted. It was shown that M'Farlane when.arrested had tripped up the constable and bumped his head on tho pavement. It took three men to koep him under restraint. The Bench warned defendant of .the seriousness of tho offence, and imposed a fine of £1 on the assault charge. For drunkenness M'Farlane was convicted ' and discharged. Having been found by night in a stable in Frederick-street, Jamos Kane was charged, with being a rogue and a vagabond within tho meaning of the Police Offences Act. Ho was convicted ajid discharged.
