WAR FUNDS
MEETING OF THE WELLINGTON
SOCIETY.
A meeting of the 'War Funds Committee was held on Thursday, Mr. W. Ferguson presiding. An apology for absence was sent by the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), who was engaged at the Supreme Court.
The Chairman reported that the Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, Mr. Tripp, and himself had interviewed the Minister for Defence in reference to Mrs. Boden's request for a grant towards a hostel for returned soldiers. Mr. Allen had been very busy and could not go very deeply into the matter then. He had promised to go into the question and communicate with them. Until they heard from the Minister he took it they could not move further in the. matter. They must be sure of the Minister's views and what the Government proposed to do. The Minister had led him to understand that he was quite alive to the necessity for something being done.
It was left to Mr. Ferguson to arrange with the Mayor and the Hon. J. G. W. Aitken the transfer of the funds in hand to the committee's account at the National Bank.
It was decided that the War Funds Account be operated upon by one trustee and the treasurer; the Imprest Account to be operated by any two of the executive, countersigned by the treasurer or secretary. A large committee was appointed to act with the two trustees in regard to dealing with all matters of finance; and another committee to investigate all cases where relief was required was also set up, comprising all members of the executive who were not on the Finance Committee.
The Chairman said he had received a copy of the scale of relief rates proposed by the Auckland Society, and he suggested that that scale should be taken as a basis.
After a brief discussion it was decided to defer the matter until there was a fuller meeting.
