MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Four first offending inebriates appeared before Mr. D G. A. Cooper, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning, and were dealt wrth according to scale. John George and George Valler, with previous convictions, were each "fined 10s, with the option, of forty-eight hours' detention. Robert Carrell, who was found helplessly drunk in Willis-street, was remanded for medical treatment.
George Alexander Mitchell, a soldier, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of a coat and trousers, the property of William Kelly, came up for sentence. Hs was convicted and sent to gaol for a month.
William Wood and George Wood, who did not appear, were charged with having used obscene language in Tui-street on the night of 27th November. They were each fined £3, with 7s costs, in default one month in gaol. Mark Carter pleaded guilty to having used obscene language on the Queen's Wharf and with having assaulted William Henry Probyn on 23rd November. Inspector Hendrey said the language and assault were the result of the board's labour foreman refusing to give defendant a job. The offence wa-s a serious one. His Worship imposed a fine of £2, with 8s costs, in default fourteen days' imprisonment, for the assault, and £3, with 13s costs, in default a month's imprisonment, for the obscene language. He was allowed a fortnight to find the money.
Robert James Nisbefc was charged with having failed to obey an order for the maintenance of his wife and child. Mr. J. C. Peacock appeared for the complainant, and said that this was the fourth occasion on which defendant had been before the Court. He had just finished a sentence of three months' imprisonment for the same offence. He was ordered to pay £3 down and £1 a week in future.
A seventeen-year-old boy named Fred West pleaded guilty to a charge of having stolen a watch, "the property of J. G. Jones, at Newtown, on 27th November. He gave the watch to his mother, saying that he had bought it for her. He was severely admonished, convicted, and ordered to come up for sentence when called UDon..
