LORD DERBY'S WORK

THE PLEDGE TO MARRIED MEN,

LONDON, 16th December.-Spe-aking in the House of Lords,. Lord Derby said that the recruiting committees sought to create an election atmosphere. Copying voters, the men waited till the last hour before they offered themselves. "We were completely snowed under," he said, "during the last week. The figures were great on Sunday, and nearly as great on Monday—overwhelming evidence that the country is absolutely determined. I ask your Lordships to support mo in saying that it will be impossible to call the married men until, the country is absolutely convinced that only a negligible quantity (?of single men) are unaccounted for. We must, above all things, keep faith with the Premier's pledge to the married men."

The ■ Marquis of Crewe congratulated the speaker on the result of his ungnidging labours. His Lordship was particularly fitted for his task, owing to his happy relations with the Labour Party.
