NOTES ON THE RACING

(By "Sir Lancelot.") | FEILDING, Ist December. Botanist was the only withdrawal from tho York States, the good field of fourtron starting. After some delay at the yo?t, caused by Purseflller refusing to join the other horses, she got a little the worst of it. When they had settled down, Denise Orme, Avon Park, and Orleans were prominent. With half-way gone Avon Park was in front, and at the home bend was showing just clear of Waiorewa, who was joined by Playoff at the turn. In the run home Sedd el Bahr got to the front and won comfortably by a length. Three or four of the others crossed the line almost on level terms. Playoff was a head in front of Avon Park, with Ardent and Purseflller almost on level terms. Heather could not act in the going, and finished last. Sedd el Bahr, who had scored at Trentham and Riccarton earlier in the season, will in future have to compete in open company.

All nineteen acceptoi'6 contested the Nikau Hack Handicap. The field included- Interlude (winner of the Aorangi Trial), -Coropet (runner-up in the Flying Stakes), and Black Ada (a place-getter in the Fibzroy Welter). Interlude began brilliantly, and at half-way was three lengths clear. Bivouac and Tavistock being at the head of the others. Interlude was still shov.-ing the way rounding the home bend, where Tirana* moved up second. Interlude died out at the distance, where Tirana- had charge, and won comfortably from Multiplication, with Pomeroy just clear of Tavistock. with Mystified aud Ma-rtyrcss. The winner hails from Taranaki. and his supporters got a double-figure dividend. His form to-day was good enough to suggest that he will win in open company. Coropet, who does not carry weight, was one of the last to finish. At half-way Happiness came to grief, and Ashley Reed got off with a shaking. The scratching of Sir Soici, Montana, and Square Dear reduced the field for the Manchester Handicap to seven. Prince Laddo, Imarose, * and Eatana were the pacemakers, passing tho stand in- that order. Along the back Koova headed Imarose, and went out after Ratana at the bend, where Princo Laddo dropped back beaten. Pat-ana was first into the straight, but. at the distance was being ridden to stall off Mamaroa, w.'io camo from the back. The latter had charge a hundred yards from home, and won comfortably "from ltai/ma-, who showed a glimpse."of his old form. CJoldstream ran better than on tho previous day. and Kooya ran well enough to suggest that she will win another race before she retires. Combustion was ridden in behind, and did not do so well as on tho previous day. The two> races won by Mamaroa were worth 420 soys. He will have •to carry 31b penalty in the Auckland C'-ip, which brings his weight up to 7.3. Mullingar, the Takapuna, winner, also had the same weight and the same penalty.

There were no withdrawals from the Cheltenham Hurdles. Parewanui and St. Gate were prominent ipv the first three-quarters, and passing t!w stand were- showing just clear "of Naupata. Parewanui made a faulty jump and lost his position, and when tlu:v got to the back of the course Naupata. kd St. Gate. Hero Glenorchy came to grief when running third.' Naupata ied to x\k- turn, where Flingot headed him. and won comfortably by a couplo ot lengths, with Master Strowan the same distance away. Naupata was next and St. Gate last. Fliiigot, who was not made so much use of to-day, is a well-known performer at the Feilding course, and is lasting -well. He carried a pound more than Master Strowan on the machine. M'Elynn (rider of Gleiwrcliy) escaped injury. *

All started for the Rongotea Hack Hurdles except Epworth and Abercoed. Rexer was promineni; to the stand, where White Plume took charge, and getting a good lead by the time the back of the course was reached, was not afterwards headed, and won comfortably by four lengths from R-exer. Cyra made up ground in the straight and beat Kurapotangi. Agatha Green went right back in the last three furlongs, and finished last. White Plume was. with one exception, the biggest outsider, and her supporters got a good price. She won with something in hand, and should score again before the season has much further advanced. The Hempie (dam of White Plume) was a successful hurdler.

The good field of nine contested the Oroua Stakes. The runmu's included Postillion (winner of the. race last year), Waiorewa. (who contcstMl the V'nrk Stakes earlier in the day), and the English colt Panmure. Uiraeter and Jliacara were strong first and second favourites. Gnld Sonlt v;is smartest to begin, and with Bimeter and Bjomebove; comprised the leading division at half-way. Rounding the bend Jliai-ara. improved her position, and was with the leaders at the distance. Hero Bimeter drew out, and won comfortably by a length and a-half fiom Biprngbprg, who S'.as JiaU a lenxtb ie

[ front of Gold Soull. Miacara and Red Ribbon were next, Waiorewa and Postillion last. For a green horse Bjorneborg ran a splendid race, and can bo ticked off as a winner at no distant date. ISimeter carried more than a. third of the total invested on the race. Supporters of the second horse got just double the amount received by backers of- Binieler. Bimeter is in the Railway Handicap at Kllerslie, hut does not incur any penalty forjtho win. Lord Nelson, and Harem Skirt were pulled out of the Maiden Hack Scurry, the good field of seventeen starters going to the post. The runners included Mosslnan, who ran second at Takapuna recently, and Tango, runner-up to Interlude- in the Aorangi Trial Plate. The pair named were best backed. Trickery and Glorify (Oliver) were first out, but were headed by Royal Chef before they had gone a furlong. He led to the turn, where Need and Mossman came through on the outside. Need (who ran second at Ashhurst) was well clear half-way down the running, and passed the post two lengths clear of Mossman, with Tango just clear of Royal Chef (CoronetCuisine), a stable-mate of Astor, who can gallop fast, Backers of Need (a cast-off of J. W. Lowe's Trentham stable) were rewarded with a double figure dividend. I Pursefiller, Patronale, Ratana, and Glacier were scratched for the Railway ' Welter, twelve starting. Square Deal, runner-up in the principal event on the previous day, was sent out a- big favourite. Ineuru (on the inside) got out best, and showed the way to Crawford and Lady Amai. This was the order along the back, where Princess Moutoa was close up. Crawford took charge at the bend, where Square Deal moved up, but in the straight Lady Amai headed Craw- J ford, and won by two lengths. Square Dea-l was close up- third. 135 Eminence, Gold Fran, and Jem were next.
