PATRIOTIC SHOW

PEOPLE'S DAY.

(BT TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL 10 THS POST.)

PALMERSTON N., This Day. To-day is People's Day at the Manawatu A. and P. Association's Patriotic Show, and the weather this morning was fine, though a strong westerly wind was blowing. The public commenced to flock through the gates as the day wore on. and the attendance in the afternoon assumed very healthy proportions, although perhaps not so large as on the corresponding day of last year's show. The " All Nations' Fair" was again a great centre of attraction, and the stallholders and ticket-sellers had a busy time. So thronged was the building that at times it was difficult to move about.

The grandstand was crowded while the jumping competitions and ; steeplechase were in progress. The spinning "jinny"' used for the sale of tickets in Mr. M'Hardy's £3000 section was well patronised.. The proceeds go towards the patriotic fund, and the holder of the winning number each time the wheel was~spun received twenty shilling tickets in tiTe art union. Messrs. Nathan and Jacobs were indefatigable in their efforts to dispose of tickets, and collected a large sum of money through the medium of the "jinny." The people also spent liberally at the side-shows, a good number of which were in evidence.

An exhibit which attracted a great deal of attention in the bazaar was a model of a house and landscape garden by Messrs. A. W. Bnxton, Ltd., of Christchurch. The model, a very prettily designed one, was an exceedingly clever piece of work. His Excellency the Governor, Lord Liverpool, visited the show during the afternoon.

The takings at the Show gates on Wednesday, the first day, were £33 10s, while yesterday the amount taken was £180 7s 9d (exclusive of the grandstand). On Wednesday the amount taken at the " All Nations" Fair was £146, and yesterday £353. a total of £499 for the two days.
