The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) had the pleasure to-day of receiving some substantial amounts for various war funds. The Huddart-Parker Shipping Company, through the Wellington manager, Mr. C. W. Jones, semV £100, Wellington's portion of £500 given by the company to New Zealand for the Wounded Soldiers and Sailors Fund; the Wairoa District War Committee (Mr. G. W. Smith, hon. secretary), forwarded £300, with a promise of £50 or £60 still to come in, all for the Red Cross Fund, for which from1 all sources the Mayor has already received £1505". The fund is now closed. Then a cheque for £150 was received from Miss Joseph, of Hob-son-street, to be disbursed as follows: — £50 for the Belgian Relief Fund, £50 for the Mayor's Patriotic Fund, and £50 for the Wounded Soldiers and Sailors Fund. From the Kia Ora Railway Benefit Society, a cheque for £3 15s was received, to he used for the Mayor's War Distress Fund. Altogether, a very, good morning.

Consequent on the retirement of Police Superintendent Ellison, of Wellington, Inspector Cruickshanki is being transferred from Auckland to the charge of the Greymouth Police District, and will be succeeded in his present position by Sub-Inspector Sheehan, of Timarn, who is to be promoted fo the rank o£ Inspector. Both these officers were formerly .stationed in Wellington. Inspector iM'Phair, at present stationed at Greymouth, is to take charge of the Waikato, Thames, and Rotorua districts, with headquarters at Hamilton, in succession to Inspector Wright (promoted to Superintendent), who has been transferred to Dunedin, vice Superintendent O'Donovan, transferred to Wellington. ?fews reached Wellington yesterday that Mr. Alex. M. Proctor, a native of Timaru, well known in Wellington, had been appointed a lieutenant in the Naval Division of the British Aviation Corps. Judge MacCormick states that the official notification of the return of his son, Capt. Kenneth MacCormick, A.M.C., by the Willochra is incorrect (states a Press Association telegram). He is convalescent- at Cairo, and now cables that he expects to return to New Zealand by the first ship. About £200 was due to the City Council from the guarantors of the Municipal Orchestra, which proved a financial failure although an intellectual success.
