RAILWAYS ACCOUNTANT
MR. H. DAVIDSON RETIRES,
At the office of the Chief Accountant of the Railways Department, Mr. H. Davidson, Chief Accountant, was presented with a, handsome watch, the occasion being his retirement from the service on superannuation. The Hon. W. H. Herries, who made the presentation on behalf of friends and subscribers and also the whole railway staff of New Zealand, said that Mr Davidson's work, though of the greatest importance to the Department and the Government, did not bring him into touch with the public. He believed it was a- fact that the accounts and statistics of the New Zealand Railways were second to nons.
Mr. Hiley, General Manager, also paid a tribute to Mr. Davidson's work, his great faculty for fairness and impartial judgment.
What the staff thought of the retiring accountant was expressed by Mr. Macdonald, who spoke of Mr. Davidson as a model chief, one whom he knew to be just, so that his decisions were never subjected to the criticisms that the decisions of the head of tho staff usually came under.
Mr. Davidson entered the service of tbo Railway Department on Ist February, 1877, as stationmaster, Waihao, now known as Morven station. In the same year he was transferred to the accountant's office, Christchurch, as chief clerk, tho office being removed to Wellington in December, 1880. On the retirement of Mr. A. C. Fife in January, 1904, ho was promoted to the position of chief accountant.
