NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By j"Sir Lancelot.")

After the declaration of final payments the principal handicap events on the opening day of the C.J.C. Meeting presents almost as open an appearance as when the handicaps first appeared. There | are thirteen horses left in the New Zealand Cup, the list of probable starters and riders being as follows: st. lb. Warstep (F. E. Jones) ... 9 5 Sinapis (A. Oliver) ... 8 5 Rinaldo (C. Price) ... 8 3 Indigo (L. Wilson) ... 8 0 Multiply (B. Deeley) ... 711 Goldstream (M. M'Donald) 7 5 Blackall (C. Emerson) ... 7 4 j Specialform (J. O'Shea) ... 7 2 Snub (H. Young) 7 0 . Tangihou (G. Clarke) ... 6 7 Midnight Star (Roy Reed) 6 7 Marc Anthony (F. Gray) 6 7 Ardenvhor (Rob Reed) ... 6 7 The Wellington-owned Sinapis is down to make her third appearance in the race. Among those who contested the event twelve months ago are the dead-heaters ' Warstep and Indigo, also Multiply. Mr. C. G. Dalgety's bracketed pair (Warstep .and Snub) will probably carry most money on the machine, with Indigo a good second favourite. Rinaldo (the Fordell representative) will also be solidly supported, but backers of any of • the other competitors should get a good price if fortunate enough to back the winner. The writer has a regard for three-year-olds in the spring, and if Snub is a good one he should be very dangerous. On his form at Trentham Indigo can be expected to put up a good light with I Warstep, whom it will not be surprising to see beaten. Rinaldo is the most classy performer of the others for a race like the one under review. If a surprise is in store, it may come from Tangihou. Goldstream is sure to run a good honest race, but Blackall has to be taken on his private reputation, which is at least a stone better than his public form. - Multiply is too unreliable. It will take more than B. Deeley's persuasive powers to get him to go on with it if he has had enough.

It looks as if a record field will contests the Stewards' Handicap. Run on the straight course, it takes a. brilliant beginner which can fight out the last fifty yards of the course if necessary to win the valuable stake. Form points to Bee, Three, Hyginas, and Taringamutu as likely to run well. Bee, who is a year older than the other performers named, did a satisfactory trial at Timaru when she defeated First Glance. The Karamu representative, Hyginas, finished in front of Three and Taringamutu at Trentham, and he may again defeat, them. Hyginas's record is three firsts and three seconds, out of six starts. Eligible beat Hyginas on two occasions last season. On the last time they met Hyginas % carried 9.2 and was beaten a length and a-half in lmin 13 2-ssec. The same day Croesus beat Hoy a neck on level terms in lmin 1& l-ssec. The latter was withdrawn from the Stewards in favour of Hyginas, who should beat more than beat him.

The probable starters and riders are as follow :—

Croesus, 8.12 (A. Oliver) Tatterley, 8.11 (L. Wilson) First Glance 8.10 (A. WormakM Bee, 8.0, (B. Deeley) Chudic, 8.0 ( ) Tete-a-tete, 8.0 (J. O'Shea) Flying Start, 7.13 (F. E. Jones) Tree Lucerne, 7.13 (O. M'Carten) Martins, 7.12 ( ) . Chakwana. 7.12 (A. Reed) Bertrada, 7.11 (W. Bell) Belasco, 7.11 (M. M'Donald) Three, 7.10 (C. Emerson} Daytime, 7.9 {J. Campbell) Hyginas, 7.9 (J. Buchanan) Taringamutu, 7.8 (E. Manson) Robert -Bell, 7.0 (H. Lowe) Fabrikofi;, 7.0 (G. Clarke) Master Achilles, 6.11 (C. Carmont) Peronilla, 6.10 (D. Anderson) Derby Day, 6.9 (S. Gibb) Hushabye, 6.9 (H. Watson) Ardent, 6.7 (H. Young) Jeannot, 6.7 (A. Lloyd) Recorder, 6.7 (K. Brooks) Week End, 6.7 (C. Sinclair)

Kingsway, Sleacombe, and Hikahaheke were the only withdrawals from the Spring Hurdles, two miles. Two of them will probably be seen out»in the hack events on the second and third days. Daylight Bill arid Naupafa are both good stayers. They meet on exactly the same terms-as when they finished first and second in the Kildare Hurdles at the Autumn Meeting. Naupata has improved since then, and he may reverse positions with the grey. Art (a double winner at the National Meeting) will be ridden by M'Flynn, and looks the best of the South Island lot. Parewanui can jump well, and will see the distance out. W. Rayner expects Aruake to run well, provided he can get a suitable rider, • • . . .

Montana defeated Kaminohe, Battle Eve, and Immer in the Wellington Handicap, and if he is started he should again finish in front of them in the Riccarton Welter Handicap. Sir George Clifford has left in both Battle Eve and Court Martial, who won the Linwood Handicap and Oaks last year. She and Multum in Parvo (the North Canterbury winner) look the best of those »t the bottom of the list.

The Wellesley Stakes -winner, Rockbound, will have to put up 1011s penalty in the Welcome Stakes. Disdainful (winner of theDimedin Stakes) and Hyttus (winner of the Hastings Stakes) will not have to put up any additional weight, and an interesting contest between this pair, Egypt, and Nystad should be witnessed for the two-year-old supremacy.

Scotch Melody and Snapdragon have np to the present shown the best performances of those engaged in the Apprentices Handicap, one mile.

The North Islander Seddul Bahr, winner of the Rimutaka, Handicap at Trentham, is in the Linwood Handicap, seven furlongs, with 8.10. The field includes half a dozen horses that have shown winning form in the South Island this season. At Timaru the four-year-old Madrid (a member of F. D. "Jones's team) carried 8.4 and ran five furlongs in lmin 2sec, She defeated Concordia at level weights, and the latter ran two good xaces at North Canterbury.

The withdrawal o£ John Barleycorn and ■ Palisade from the New Zealand Cup leaves the Otago district without a representative in the race. The most notable defection from the Stewards' Handicap was the mysterious Nones. As at Wanganui and Trentham", backers who got in early instead of waiting until the day are again lamenting their losses.

1 The Victoria Racing Club's Spring Heating will be brought to a conclusion to-morrow.. Tie .y.R.C. BUndicaa one

mile and three-quarters, and the C. B Fisher, Plate, one mile and a-half, weight-for-age, are the most important events on the afternoon's programme.
