ENGLISHWOMAN EXECUTED
FOR AIDING HER COUNTRYMEN. LONDON, 16th October. The United States Ambassador has informed the Foreign Office that Edith Cavell, lately head of a training school for nurses in Brussels, was arrested in August and executed on 13th October. It is understood that she was charged "with harbouring fugitive British and French soldiers and Belgians of military age, and assisting them to escape to Belgium to join the colours. (Received October 18, 9 a.m.) LONDON, 16th October. Miss Cavell was the daughter of a former Vicar of Swardeston. The news of the execution has sent a thrill of horror throughout the country.
