BULGARIANS OBLIGED TO RETIRE
SERVIAN COUNTER-OFFENSIVE ON THE SAVE (Received October 18, 9.30 a.m.) PARIS, 17th Octobei. The Athens correspondent of the Matin states that the Servians, with the assistance of French troops, obliged the Bulgarians to retire. The Servians further north advanced towards Strumnitza, and, moreover, assumed a counter-offensive on the Save, and threw back detachments of the enemy towards the river, annihilating them. The Echo de Paris declares that the Servians have retaken the positions at Pisana and Bonkva which the Bulgarians captured on Tuesday. ROME, 17th October. II Secolo states that 50,000 Bulgarians attacked the Servians on Wednesday in the region of Doiran. Obstinate fighting continues. (Received October 18, 9.45 a.m.) PARIS, 17th October. T^he German attempt to surround the Servian left near Semendria- -was repulsed with enormous losses. The Bulgarians are stubbornly attacking in the Timok region, hoping to join up with General yon Mackensen. The Servians, entrenched on the hills near Belgrade, and strongly supported by artillery, are repeatedly repelling assaults. GERMAN OFFICIAL NEWS. LONDON, 16th October. A Berlin communique states : General yon Mackensen has further driven back the Servians south of Belgrade and Semendria, taking 450 prisoners, and three guns. He stormed the southern front, and Pojarevatz, a fortified town, has been thus captured. The Bulgarian First Army captured the mountain passes between Bielogradchig and Kniazhevatz, north-east of Nish. ' (Received October 18, 9 a.m.) LONDON, 16th October. The Berlin communique states that General yon Mackensen is further advancing. We stormed, southward of Semendria, Varnovo Hill, eastward of Pozarevatz, also the village of Smoljina. The Bulgarians forced a crossing of the frontier ridges between Negotin and Strumitz, and captured the eastern forts at Sewitchar. (Received October 18, 9 a.m.) SOFIA, 17th October. The Bulgarians concentrated feeble forces at Pirot, holding three complete divisions.- Between Pirot and Sofia strong artillery has been posted at intervals along the railway. MACKENSEN'S CALCULATIONS UPSET. (Received October 18, 9 a.m.) PARIS, 17th October. ' The Matin's Nish correspondent says that General yon Mackensen is greatly depressed by Servia's unexpected resistance, which has upset his calculations, and necessitated the Bulgarian attack earlier than was intended. SUBMARINES AT VARNA. (Received October 18, 11 a.m.) ATHENS, 16th October. Skilled German artisans from Constantinople are putting together submarines, which have reached Varna in sections.
