♦ WELLINGTON SOUTH v. WORKING MEN'S CLUB j The tenth annual match between the , above clubs was played at the Newtown < Public Library last Monday evening, < and proved more than ordinarily exciting. At the interval for refreshments the tally was 6£ to 4£ in favour of the j home team, and only three games were then unfinished. These were, however, all scored by the visitors, who thus won , by the smallest possible margin, the result being in doubt right up to the , finish of the last game at 11.30 p.m. ' The club's officials had worked hard to ' secure the attendance of 40 players, ( but as each side had six players away | it was only possible to use fourteen of j the twenty boards set out. The number of players who forgot all about the function will probably long remain a record | for a local chess match, unless, perhaps, ! the war should be even more absorbing next year than it is in these days, when fresh forces have been added to the big I chess game of Europe by the extension I of the blaze to the Balkans. It may be added that the above annual fixture was instituted in 1906, a ■ year after the formation of the Welling- j ton South Club. Of the ten matches ] played to date the Working Men's Club j has won five, the Wellington South Club i four, and one ended in a tie, viz.,that I played in 1907, when each side totalled 12 points. The full score of last Monday's very enjoyable contest is as follows :—: —
