ASHBURTON RAISING RELIEF FUND. (.BT TELEORAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) ASHBURTON, 16th October. A public meeting was held this afternoon to inaugurate the Ashburton County War Relief Fund, by which it is hoped to raise £25,000 for the relief of Ashburton County soldiers and dependants. The first £5000 was raised ai the meeting, the principal subscriptions being £1000 from Mr. Thomas Bullock, and £500 each from Messrs. John Grigg, Nicoll Bros., Robert Bell, and D. G. Wright.
Songs of the native birds was the subject*? of an address by Mr. Johannes C. Andersen before a recent meeting of the Wellington Field Naturalists' Club. Special attention was paid to the songs of the tui, the bell bird, the grey warbler, the wren, the tomtit, and the fantail. Songs of birds, the lecturer said, differed as to locality and season of the year. Introduced birds, he thought, had some effect on the songs, of our native "birds. The lecturer dealt fully with his mode of recording each song. His work was not a mere mimicking of each bird by ear. but aan exacb written record of each bird's song. This record was compiled only after each song had been repeated several times and sung in the hearing of the lecturer. The importance of this work to New Zealand's natural history was emphasised by the fact that our birds are becoming scarcer and scarcer as the white man removes the forest, and unless a record is soon obtained the chance of obtaining that record will be lost forever, as is even now the case with some birds which have become extinct. At the conclusion of the address, Dr. L. Cockayne, F.R.S., outlined briefly the trip to York ,Bay on Labour Day, and mentioned those things specially of interest which were to be seen there. Professor H. B. Kirk, M.A., showed some microscopic slides of one of the star fishes at Island Bay, showing its life history from the egg to a fairly advanced stage. A party headed by Professor Kirk explored the nools at Tpland Bay on Saturday, and afterwards examined the finds at the Victoria College laboratory
