THE PRICE OF KNITTING WOOL
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — The war has " been given the credit of many articles that were in common use before it, and were not in strong demand, (being almost doubled in price. It will be admitted that amongst the materials that are now being enormously used owing to the . war, are knitting wools One can see women and children in the trams and eleswhere, as busy as they can be, knitting various articles such as stockings, mittens, balaclavas, and various other things All these articles are, when completed, given free to troops who are going and are at the front To a small number the price of the material used is a matter of no moment, but to others who as I know devote" a great deal of their time in knitting these articles, the price is most important, and it comes as a hard tax on them, that the price of the various classes of knitting wools should have been so greatly increased. The same wool before, the war could have been bought by skein at 7d and is' now *10d, others 3£d, now 5. Why should this be so? Will the sellers kindly inform the public of the reason for their great advance on the prices before war and now. As this country is a great wool-producing one, it seems passing s'crange that such a lot of knitting wools have to be imported. Are not the various mills in the Dominion able to manufacture these wools? Surely the cost of obtaining the necessary machinery (if it is necessary) is not a large one — I am, etc..
