MEAT EXPORT
EXCEPTIONAL INCREASE IN SPITE OF FREIGHT SHORTAGE. The Prime Minister (Right Hon. W. F. Massey) has received a return, showing that for the year ended 30th September, 1915, the export of freight carcases was 1,566,622 more than for the previous twelve months. These figures, said Mr. Massey, were highly satisfactory, especially in view of the trouble that has been experienced in obtaining shipping freight. In recent correspondence to the Prime Minister on the same subject, the High Commissioner states that, from enquiries, it appears that charges from the Argentine Republic to Great Britain are £d per lb lower than those from New Zealand, also that Argentine beef can be sent direct to France for the use of the troops, whereas New Zealand meat must first go to Great Britain and be sorted according to quality. His opinion is that the New Zealand beef costs the Board of Trade just as much as the Argentine article, but he is obtaining definite information on this point.
