More than 200 persons at San Sal- ,,, vadbr have lost their lives during the ,'. last seven weeks as a result of frequent .' earthquakes, and property has been \ i damaged. ■' Many valuable buildings have collapsed, and numerous others have been ; " damaged. Reports from one large town declare that only four structures are left •■ ; standing. ; • [San Salvador was founded in 1528, 1* and in 1854 was destroyed by an earth- . quake. A new town was built twelve •; miles south-west of the original site. '-' Violent shocks of earthquake have since ' visited the capital— in 1873, 1879, and t TASMANIAN BUDGET ; THE TREASURER'S DILEMMA, HOBART, 15th October. The Treasurer (Hon. J. A. Lyons) in ' his Budget stated that the year ended . with a deficit of £140,000, including £40,000 advanced against ore and £15,- [ 000 loss on imported wheat. What '-'. troubled him was where to get money to *' carry on. He was able to do this till • the end of the present calendar year, but !'"' beyond that he was unable to see what !' he was to do. BUMPER WHEAT HARVEST ' PROSPECTS IN NEW SOUTH WALES SYDNEY, 15th October. The majority of the districts report '.'. excellent prospects of a bumper wheat ; harvest. State officials and business men doubt whether sufficient overseas transportation will be available to move the surplus.
