"A SCANDAL."
The Law Journal (British) records that in an action over a contract Mr. Justice Ridley declined to hear the case for the defence, and snubbed the jury. Says the Law Journal : — " When they were told by the learned Judge, at the close of the plaintiffs' case and before the defence was fully opened, to find a verdict for the plaintiffs, the following colloquy is reported to have taken place: — "The foreman: The Jury would like to consider this matter. " His Lordship t I shall not allow you to consider it. "The foreman- Some of the jury consider this is a travesty of justice to the defendants. "His Lordship: Do you? Then you will be good enough to hold your tongue about it. In my opinion" it is a clear case in which the plaintiffs are entitled to judgment. I enter judgment for the plaintiffs, and you (to the foreman) will be good enough to be more respectful. "If this report be correct (comments the Law Journal) the comment of the conscientious jurymen was, in our opinion, not a whit too strong; and w« venture to go 'further and say that the incident is a scandal to the administration of justice."
