NUMBER SMALLER THAN IS COMMONLY SUPPOSED. LONDON, 19th September. The Daily Chronicle states that Lord Lansdowne's committee is making a schedule of trades and industries from which recruiting shall be prohibited. It is attaining formidable proportions. After all deductions, the number of men available for military service is less than is commonly supposed. CONTROVERSY A NATIONAL CALAMITY. (Received September 20, 8.10 a.m.) LONDON, 19th September. Lord Selborne, speaking at Norwich, said Lord Kitchener had consented to exempt skilled agriculturists from enlisting. He warned the public to believe little of what they saw in the papers regarding national service. The present controversy was a national calamity.
