CRUEL TREATMENT OF COWS
. A GIRL CONVICTED. (it mroMTß— pmss istoamdu.) DUNEDIN, 10th September. In the Port Chalmers Police Court to-day « woman named Emily Duckmanton and a girl aged 15 years were charged with cruelly ill-treating two j cows, the property of * Kate Beatrice Johnstone, by applying some blistering preparation to their teats. A plea of not guilty was entered^ .! The evidence for the prosecution showed that complainant, who resides at Portobello, and whose husband is at the Dardanelles, had* given Mrs. Duckmanfon permission to drive cows through her paddock, but the privilege was withdrawn owing to it being abused. On 19th August complainant found the teats of the cows blistered by some irritant, which caused them severe suffering and seriously affected their value. The girl accused admitted patting some ointment on the cows' teatc for a lark, at the instigation of the older accused, but Mrs. Duckmanton denied' having taken part in the incident. The case agains Mrs. Duckmanton was x dismissed, but the girl was convicted and remanded till Thursday for sentence.
