GERMAN LEAGUES IN CANADA
FORMIDABLE POLITICAL' ORGANISATIONS. (TIMS 4SD tTfiKIT SON KRTtCW.) LONDON, 10th September. The Times correspondent at Toronto states that formidable political organisations of Germans have, been discovered in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Leagues which were formed in 1913 protest their' loyalty, bat explain that they have a cultural mission to fulfil which must maintain the German language in Canada. THE ARABIC GERMAN NOTE RECEIVED. WASHINGTON, 10th September. Germany's Note about the Arabic has been received. It contends that the steamer changed her course, causing the submarine to torpedo her. THE NATION'S SELFSACRIFICE AN APPEAL FOR ABSTINENCE FROM ALCOHOL. SYDNEY, 7th September The head* of the Protestant churches have issued a combined appeal, " impressing seriously on the minds of thote w« can influence the duty of bearing a voluntary part in the nation's self-sacri-fice and self-discipline, by abstaining from alcohol during the war, and urging members of the churches to ca.ll upon the Government to meet the necessity of the hour and pass effective measures to restrict the sale of drink."
