GISBORNE RESIDENT FINED. (IT TILEGRAPH.--HIISS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, This Day. 4 William Prericks, of Guborne, a passenger by the Niagara from Sydney, was charged at the Police Court with an attempt to smuggle gold and diamond brooches, apparel, etc., of the total value' of £15 19s lOd, on which duty of £16 was payable. Defendant stated that he was unaware that duty had to be paid on any of the articles. He had no intention to defaud the Customs. He owned several farms at Gisborne and was in good circumstances. Mr. Cutten, S.M., said he would have to convict the defendant. He imposed a fine of £25, adding that the goods would be forfeited.
