In the Assembly, the appearance of the early closing of hotels petition produced an extraordinary counter-demon-stration. Numerous petitions, totalling 150,085 signatures in favour of no interference, were presented by private members. Mr. Brown submitted a motion in favour of early closing. He said he knew that there was no mandate from the people to curtail licensed hours, but the world had undergone a great "change since the last elections. He pointed out that the hours had been restricted in other States. On Mr. Stuart Robinson's motion, the debate was adjourned to 7th SeptemI ber. SECRET DISEASES EVIDENCE BEFORE N.S.W. COMMISSION. (Received August 18, 8.45 a.m.) § SYDNEY, This Day. Dr. Bray, in charge of the venereal clinic at Prince Alfred Hospital, gave some startling evidence before the Secret Diseases Commission. From January to the end of June, he said, 1320 cases were treated. Patients were constantly sent away because it was impossible to accommodate them. It has now been arranged for 500 to be treated weekly. Many respectable married women had been infected innocently, and a great number of children' treated. Twenty to twenty-five under ten years of age were treated weekly until recently. DOCK SHORTAGE PORT OF LONDON AUTHORITY'S INTENTIONS. LONDON, 16th August.
