THE HOSPITAL SHIP
THE GOVERNOR'S THANKS TO THE PEOPLE. Mr. Gavin Hamilton, Private Secretary to the Governor, has forwarded us a copy of a letter in which' His Excellency acknowledges the assistance he received from the New Zealand public in connection with the equipment of the Hospital Ship Maheno. The letter is addressed to the people of New Zealand, and is as follows :*— ( "I desire to ajmresa my deep apprecia^ tion to all who nave co generously responded to my appeal to equip the haspi. tal sliip Maheno. I have personally given my undivided attention to see that, while having due regard to economy, sh« should leave these snores, co fa'v as it is possible, lacking nothing,' My only re* gret is that I have not been able to personally thank each of the many donors, but I hope they will allow me through the medium of this letter to say how greatly I haV6 been touched by the way in which they have assisted me. I wish it had been possible for the M&he'no to visit the various pM'Us of the bominion, so that everybody might hava had an opportunity of seeing her, but I am convinced that all will agree with me that it would have been inadvi:<;iblu to delay the ship's departure. Uudoi 1 existing arrangements, it a anticipated that the Maheno will return to New Ze« land in about six month** time, bringing ac many as she can comfortably accommodate of those wh<Me wounds will prevent their returning to the front, for it is highly essential tha-t these men should make the leturn journey under the most favourable conditions possible. -LIVERPOOL, Governor."
