TALISMAN CONSOLIDATED

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS AT DEPTH. (BY TBLEORAPH— SPECIAL TO fHB POST.) , WAIHI, 26th June. This morning, in company with the superintendent (Mr. H. Stansefield) your representative inspected the various points at t which development work is in progress^ in tho 'low levels of the Talisman mine at # Karangahake. In the Woodstock section, the crosscut east from the main north drive under the Tauka- 1 nei Hill has been thrown out 300 ft with the object of picking up the Maria reef, and being now beyond the point at which tho lodeehould havo been met with, crosscutting in this direction has been stopped, and the advancement of the main north drive resumed. For some little distanco the drive followed the quartz formation out at 150 ft in the east crosscut, and as the reef then split up into stringers the drive was carried along to the line in, country rock, in order to get under the point where good ore was obtained som© years ago in workings overhead. The objeotive is still about 500 ft north of the present face, and the drive, which is traversing a good class of country rock, will not be deviated from line unless 4 something of value is met with during its advancement. Should the Maria reef not be encountered in the drive, a crosscut will be thrown out later 'on in search of the ore body. The drive Jiorth of the haaiging-wall^ portion of the Maria reef, which was picked up in the crosscut east from the main drive 6outh from the Woodstock shaft, is now out 160 ft, and, boing in touch with the fault which cut off the lode overhead, driving has been suspended in this direction. Values proved variable, and included runs of payable ore, preparations for the storage and treatment^ of which are in hand. Driving south is now in progress, and in this direction the vein also carnes some payable quartz. At No. 14 level in the Talisman portion of the mine No : 19 winzo is now down 130 ft, and is in a strong body of quartz, but values are low. On the low level (No. 15) the drive south on the Maria reef from No. 12 winze has yet to be advanced over 100 ft before it reaches the point at which the most northerly of the runs of pay. ore in the Dubbo section was nieb with at the leVel above. The reef in the face is encaeed in a favourable class of country, but driving has been temporarily stopped to permit of timbering preparatory to the stoping out of a short block of milling ore further north. In the drive north, where the Maria reef was being followed in good grade ore, a fault, which displaced the lode, was recently met with 40ft north of where the Woodstock fault should have been encountered, provided it persisted aL this depth and maintained its normal dip of 55 degrees, which it had consistently done from No. 9 down to No. 14 level. Recently an intermediate drive between Nos. 14 und 15 levels was carried 45ft north of where the Woodstock fault should have been located had it gone down without niceting < with any disturbance, and this_ gave the impression that the fault had died out. Another remarkable feature is that the fault at No. 15 stands almost vertical (its dip being about 80 degrees), and does not carry the characteristics of the Woodstock fault. It is ploa-sing to note that where the Maria rcef_ was again picked up about Bft away in the west, values were in evidence, and a well-defined body of nice grade 6tono is now 6howing in the north face, with only the hanging-wall exposod. Operations going north will thus be followed with interest, as they have already demonstrated that pay ore lives beyond where the Woodstock fault was expected, whereas at No. 14 level values ceased a few feet south of the fault, and at No. 13 level tho pay ore cut; out over 200 ft south of the fault. _ How far the milling oro is going to live north only time will toll, but if the lode continues to carry payable quartz for any distance in this direction, the development* will go far towards for the somewhat disappointing results _ which attended the operations in the drive on the Bonanza- section of the reef further south at the Jow level.
