REINDEER MEAT.

Through the efforts of the United States Government, endeavours are being made to establish a new industry among the Eskimo natives of Alaska through the exportation of reindeer meat. Last autumn, just before the close of navigation at Nome, Ala-ska, a steamship carried a cargo of reindeer carcases to Seattle, where retail prices ranging from 20 to 35 cents a pound were readily obtained for them. The dining-car departments of five transcontinental railways have given reindeer meat a trial, and it is said to have met with favour among the passengers. It is likely a considerable amount of the meat will be shipped to the United States during the approaching summer, as the proposal of a cold-storage company operating between Seattle and Nome, bearing the approval of the Interior Department, has been made to the Eskimo herders in North-western Alaska to market all the surplus meat at prices that will be profitable to the natives.
