MAGISTRATE'S COURT
♦ Eleven inebriates were paraded before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning. Four were first offenders, and were convicted and discharged. Margaret Withers, Herbert Harvey, Victor Lusty, and John Sullivan were each ordered to pay a fine of 10s, with the alternative of 48 hours in gaol. Angus M'Kay was fined 20s, or three days' imprisonment, and Thomas Forsyth was sent to gaol for a month. Thomas Campbell was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and for having used obscene language he was fined £3, with the option of going to gaol for a month. Time to pay was refused. Jessie MTSwan, who had escaped from the Salvation Army Home, was sent to gaol for three months. William John Moore was charged with having left New Zealand while a maintenance order was in force against him. He was brought back by the Wimmera from Hobart this morning, and remanded to appear at Dunedin on the 30th inst. Bail was fixed at £50. John Millanta and Frank A. Barton were charged on remand from yesterday with having stolen eighteen fowls and a leg of pork from a restaurant in Courte-nay-place. Mr. D. S. Smith appeared for the accused, who gave evidence on their own behalf to the effect that they bought the fowls from another man. His Worship convicted both accused of having received the fowls knowing them to have been stolen. Barton was sent to gaol for a month, and Millanta was fined 40s, with 8s costs, with the alternative of a month in gaol.
