HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

The House of Representatives met immediately after His Excellency had departed. The Speaker, after formally reporting his attendance upon His Excellency, announced that the Tauxnarunui election writ had been returned, and that Mr. W. T. Jennings had been duly elected. The Hon. A. L. Herdman gave notice of the introduction of several measures connected with war matters. The Hon. James Allen, Minister for Defence, gave notice to move that a Secret Committee, composed of eleven members, be set up to consider matters relating to defence in time of war that might be referred to it, and with power to call for persons, papers, etc. An Imprest Bill was introduced at 3.10 p.m., making provision for £1,285,000 and £300,000 transferred from the Consolidated Fund for the year ending 31st March, 1916. Sir Joseph Ward said that his side of the House wished to give the Government every assistance, and asked Mr. Massey when measures relating to the war were likely to be brought down. Tho Prime Minister replied that such measures would be brought down at the earliest possible moment. He added that the War Taxation Bill was almost ready, and would be available in a day or two. The Bill was passed without discussion. (Proceeding.)
