We left on the 2nd March for Cardiff to bunker, and had orders from the examining boat to get past the straits at our liveliest speed That order was very emphatic. Wo were to have the whole of the firemen at the furnaces, and to make her hop, and she 'hopped.' We heard on the following day that a submarine was sunk in Menal Strait, so I suppose she was the cause of all the anxiety on our behalf. After a mieerable fortnight in Cardiff, we went to Nova Scotia to load for New Zealand ports, and nearly knocked an iceberg over in the grey dawn. We had to go full speed astern with one engine and ahead with the other, bang the helm hard over, and say a prayer as «he scraped past the berg, missing it by only a few yards. A few days later we got foul of a field of pack ice, and at one • tune the old Tongariro was stopped dead by huge glistening boulders of ice extending " as far ac the eye could reach. We nosed our way through it with big chunks of Jce banging and thumping our ship's sides with a noise resembling baby thunder." The Tongariro left Sydney last evening for Auckland and Wellington \ 'PERSONAL Captain Jolly, late of the Port Pirie, has (reports the Sydney Shipping List) succeeded Captain Hodgson as maeter of the C. and D. liner Indralema Mr. C, Naismith has joined the Blenheim as engineer Mr. F.
