BOXING AT PETONE

Some good boxing exhibitions and contests were witnessed at Petone last evening, when an entertainment was given in aid of Miss Senior's Fund. There was a large attendance. All of the bouts lasted three rounds. The first contest was between W. Martin (Petone) and H. Mudgeway (Lower Hutt). The pace was willing from the start. In the last round Mudgeway was defeated. The second contest, between Desmond and Pointon, both of Wellington, resulted in a win for Desmond on points. The amateur ' heavy-weight contest proved to be the most exciting of the evening. Tancred and Demp»ey, both of Petone, were a fairly evenly-matched pair, but Tancred got in some good blows on the head, which dazed Dempsey. In the last round Tancred went in to finish his man. but they clinched, and Tancred, in endeavouring to break, threw his opponent. The 1 match was awarded to Dempsey on a foul. In the professional welter-weight match M'Farlane replaced Leckie against Richards, and a good exhibition was given The ne:s*-"?fcem on the programme was an exhib^tian skip by G. Turner, F.R.G.S., world's champion. Mr. Turner kept up to 995 in five minutes. Ike Kutner took the place of W. Mack in the special exhibition bout against W. Elliot. Some very good sparring was witnessed. A. M'Kay and R. Urwin, both Petone men, met in an amateur middle-weight contest. Urwin was adjudged the winner on points. The remainder of the programme was made up of exhibition bouts, the chief of which was between Tim Tracy and B. Olliver. The crowd was treated to a good exhibition of boxing. Young Taylor (Australia) and Mark Minifie provided an enjoyable exhibition. The two other exhibitions were between D. Stewart (Petone) and H. Barlow (exNavy champion), and R. Parrant (Petone) and W. Oliiver (Wellington). The judges were Messrs. Gale and Talbot, Mr. Guise acted as referee, and Messrs. Binns and Blyth as timekeepers.
