AND THEIR REMARKABLE QUALITIES. (Received June 18. 9.50 a.m.) SYDNEY. This Day. Oapt. Bean writes: One of the most remarkable qualities of the Australian and New Zealand troops during the first three days was the many men living in trenches a quarter of a mile away from the nearest officer, taking commands from some corporal or sergeant, who lose to the occasion and took control with complete confidence. Many men in the trenches during these critical dnys never saw .an officer — there were not enough to go around. The subordinate commanders did not hesifatc to take control. They showed wonderful capacity.
