EASTBOURNE

BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY. The second annual meeting of the Eastbourne Beautifying Society was held in the Eastbourne Ilall last night. There was a good attendance of members, and an enthusiastic spirit prevailed. Mr. H. W. Shortt presided. The report and balance-sheet, which made a very satisfactory showing, were read and adopted. The society has a cash balance of £47. The election of officers resulted as follows :—Patron, Mr. T. M. Wilford ; president, Mr. D. M. Findlay; vicepresidents, Sir John Findlay, Messrs. W. Allan, A. Blair, A. M. Cook, W. A. Grace, H. H. Heywood, J. P. Kelly, A. Levy, W. F. Shortt, 0. P. Skerrett, K.C., E. T. Wise, and E. G. F. Zohrab; auditor, Mr. H. Gray ; joint hon. secretaries, Messrs. H. Cook and F W. Downs ; management committee, Mes- | dames H. W. Shortt, F. W. Downs, Misses Young, G. Foley, and Ashworth, , and Messrs. H. W. Shortt, W. Organ, — M'Phei-son, J. Heenan, and P. DE. Hodgkins ; entertainment committee, Mesdames Chittey, F. W. Downs, and M'Pherson, Misses Young, G. Foley, Leslie, and Nixon, Messrs. H. Wright, J. Perry, and S. Ross, with power to add to their number. It was decided that the management committee make preparations for a, work- j ing bee on Arbor Day. ! At the close of the meeting Mr. H. W. Shortt read an interesting paper on "The Early History of Eastbourne," which brought to light many interesting facts with which the more recent residents of the district are unacquainted.
