ARE SUGAR SUPPLIES AMPLE ?
EXCEPTION TAKEN TO A STATEMENT. (BY TELEGIUPH— I'ItESS ASSOCIATION.) TIMARU, This Day. The local manager of Wilson Co., Dun« cdin merchants, takes strong exception to a telegram published on Friday ,stating that the manager of the Colonial Sugar Company declares that supplies are ample to meet the Dominion's requirements, and does not anticipate any shortage. Wilsons are the company's distributing agents- for, South Canterbury, receiving shipments of about 100 tons every thiee weeks. Last Friday twenty-live tons only arrived. The company had offered ten tons, but the director of Wilsons made personal representations to the company at Auckland, and secured an increase to twenty-five tons, which was about a quarter of the ordinary shipment. On Friday evening Wilsons received a telegram from the company as follows : — "Bearing in mind that stocks are short, any orders sent must not exceed urgent requirements. Think last two shipments should keep most of them going without further delivery. Next Wanaka." This means that the next ordinary shipment to Timaru will be cut out. As Wilsons have no sugar stored, this district is threatened with famine. Wilsons naturally ask why, if ample supplies are available, the company is not distributing them?
