VIOLENT ATTACKS BY THE ENEMY

(Received June 7, 9 a.m.) PARIS, 6th June. A communique states: — On the night of the sth the Germans made a violent effort to retake the positions they recently lost. There was a continuous bombardment of the Abkin-Nepville sector, especially of the refinery at Souchez. We replied energetically to the Germans, who made five counter-attacks on the slopes east of the Chapel of Lorette. There were incessant counterattacks in the wood east of the Aix Noulette-Souchez load. The German offensive was completely broken. The French maintained all their positions, inflicting heavy losses. They took several trenches and .thirty prisoners. 1
