A VIOLENT BATTLE

AUSTRALIANS AND NEW ZEALANMRS IN ACTON Important news from the Gallipoli Peninsula is p\iblislied to-day. It shows that the Australian and New Zealand troops, after a violent battle lasting twelve hours, drove the enemy from the' heights of Krithia, the victory consolidating the Allies' position on the peninsula. In the German and Austrian capitals there are great rejoicings over the fall of Przemysl. People in the Russian capital accept the reverse with stoicism, regarding it as merely an episode in a great, complicated struggle. Meanwhile on the River San the Russians appear to be meeting with some success, the enemy having been driven back in places with heavy losses. On the western front there has been continuous fighting, in which the artillery on 'both sides has played a prominent part. Late messages show that the Allies have maintained their positions despite violent attacks by the enemy. It is ' pointed out that Germany hopes, if she is able to push the Russians back sufficiently to render the movement safe, to return large forces to Handera. The Italians are concentrating troops at strategical points. Several places have been occupied, and the advance continues without a hitch except on the Isonzo River, where the Italian offensive is beset with difficulties, natural and otherwise..
