"THE TRENTS"
LETTER FROM LORD LIVERPOOL. READ TO THE REGIMENT. Tho Trentham Regiment (the Earl of Liverpool's Own) was specially paraded at Trentham camp yesterday morning, when the following letter from tho Earl of Liverpool, hon. colonel of the regiment, was read by Lieut. -Colonel H. Fulton, officer commanding the Ist Battalion, to the officers, n.co.'s, and men: — "Dear Colonel Fulton and Colonel Stewart,— l must in the first instance thank you both for your very kind letter of Ist June, which you wrote on behalf of the officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of the two battalions. No one knows better than you 'that once a soldier always a soldier,' and it is therefore a source of pride to me to be associated with these two new battalions in becoming their honorary colonel. I only wish that the duties associated with that position were a little more active, but at all events in the months which will be devoted to training I shall hope to come and see you on more than one occasion, and you may be sure that not only I but the whole Dominion will follow your doings with the keenest interest, and wo \ have no doubt about the part which you will play when the time comes for you to leave these shores.— Believe me, yours sincerely, (Signed) Liverpool." It has been freely rumoured in camp that it is intended to, send the new battalions to another part of the country to pursue their training. The Defence authorities when questioned on the subject stated that there was no foundation for the report, and that the regiment would remain in camp for the next three months. All officers, n.co.'s, and men of the reigment will be inoculated against typhoid to-morrow, and no lea,ve accordingly will be granted between midnight to-night and 5 p.m. on Monday.
