SOUTHERN MARKETS

(»T TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH,. 4th June. The wheat market is firm, but with little business doing. A few sales are being made by merchants to fill requirements in other parts of the Dominion, but there is practically no wheat offering by growers. Those who have not disposed of their wheat are firm holders, and are generally asking 7s at country stations. No oats are forthcoming from growers, and the market keeps very firm. Owing to the scarcity of supplies, oatsheaf chaff is in good demand from the North Island. The potato market has advanced as the offerings are now limited, the ruling prices being £4 5s to £4 7s 6d at country stations, according to distance. Cowgrass seed is now offering more freely, and although the crop is a short one, prices are low in consequence of heavy importations. The prices being' paid are 6d and 7d per lb.
