GERMAN SPIES SENTENCED

ONE TO BE SHOT. (Received June 5, 1 p.m.) LONDON, 4th June. The Press Bureau reports the trial at the OJd Bailey, in camera, before the Lord Chief Justice, and Lord Justices Avory and Lush, of Muller, who was sentenced to death by shooting. Kahn was sentenced to seven years' penal servitude. (""The military authorities have already (stated- a cable message from London published _ in The Post # on 12th April) taken evidence regarding the alleged I spies Kuepferli, Muller, and Hahn. It was decided to refer the cases to the Civil Courts, probably to Lord Reading, the Lord Chief Justice, to try. A secret trial is expected, in order to keep secret the_ British _ anti-spy methods. Kuepferli's case is of grave importance. He arrived from America, and was shadowed till he arrived in a London hotel. It is alleged that all worked in conjunction, using similar methods. The recent Defence of the Realm Amendment Act has established civil trials in camera with powers hitherto reserved to the court martial. The New York Sun's London correspondent states that Kucpferli's ar- I rest reveals that New York was the centre of a German spy system against Britain. Kuepferli's movements were carefully mapped out before he left New York, and he^ccomplished his mission in Britain in five days, though he had never been in Britain before." The trial of Kuepferli was brought to a tragic termination by the* suicide in prison of the accused man, who was a German officer. It was proved that he had left. New York on 4th February as a thirdclass passenger on the Arabic, representing himself as an American. He arrived at Liverpool on 14th February.]
