WELLINGTON'S HEIGHT.
The height of the great Duke «<f Wellington is discussed by readers vl the Spectator, several of them with parnonal knowledge, for three of them have ,seen him. One old veteran of 84 — evidently in good spirits still — writes : — "It makes me laugh to read this controversy as to the Duke of Wellington's height. Why not ask somebody who hcvd been in the habit of seeing him? Surftly I cannot be the only person now livix^j; who was well acquainted with him. I\i* was an intimate friend of both my parents and was constantly at our housa. You may, therefore, believe me when 1 say that he was neither tall nor short; medium height, in fact ; but had a habit of inclining his head forward, so that he ' looked shorter than he really was. I am certain he was very much taller than Napoleon." Another, who as a boy frequently saw the Duke in the Green Park, says he was sft Bin or sft 9in. The granddaughter of Wellington's elder brother says he was always said in the family to be sft lOin.
