LOCAL AND GENERAL ♦ There is every promise of fine weather for to-morrow, and those who are interested in sport should be well catered for. The chief attraction in the Rugby world, wilj be the clash between Trentham and Athletic, at Athletic Park. In the interval there will be a game between two ladies' teams, two spells of five minutes each, with the object of furthering the candidature of Nurse Everitt, the Sports candidate for the Queen Carnival. The game will be controlled by a lady referee. Under the Soccer code there should be some interesting play, especially between Y.M.O.A. A and Diamonds ; and League football, hockey, harriers, and other forms of sport have also been arranged for. Reports of all the games will be published in I*he Post Sports Edition to-morrow night, together with the latest news from the front. The question of the bonus for the discovery of phosphate deposits in the Dominion was considered by the Board of Agriculture recently in conjunction with a valuable report from the Director of Geological Survey on the occurrence of phosphate rock in certain localities in New Zealand It was decided to recommend that a larger bonus be offered. By an Order in Council, the limitation of the amount of interest- bearing de« posit® in the Post Office Savings Bank shall not apply to deposits made by the trustees of any fund approved by the Governor under section 2 of the War Contributions Validation. Act. This may be taken to mean that all such funds placed with the Post Office Savings Bank will earn on any amount the full current rate of interest of 3§ per cen-t. "For the past seven years, the sum of £102,000 has been Bpent by way of capital expenditure out of ordinary rates," stated the Mayor last night, referring to the cost of acquiring properties in the course of street widening operations. The remainder were offered for gate by auction, and the gross proceeds totalled 110 dollars. Winter Nelis pears realised the highest price of 3.75 dollars per case, equivalent to about 15s 6d. Winter Cole pears netted 3 dollars per case, and Jonathan apples 2 dollars.
