CORPORATION LEASE
The Corporation lease held by Mr. S. Gil'mer on the Market Hall Reserve, Manners-street, was the subject of a. further discussion at last night's meeting of the City Council. The Leaseholds Committee recommended that the lessen be informed that the council has no power to accede to 'his various requests for a i-ednction in his rental (in consequence of the recent awards in the Lambton Reclamation Rentals), for an extension of th© term of his lease, and for a purchase of the freeholds. Councillor Barber moved that the report Le referred back. Pie contended that the total rental of J31385 was very high in ..view of the recent awards made by the Arbitration Court. At least Mr. Gilmer should be allowed an extension of two of the three leases. It was very awkward that these should run out before the main lease. If Mr. Gilmer desired to erect a building he should be encouraged. Councillor Luckie opposed any reduction. If a reduction was granted the" council would affirm the awards recently made, which was hardly consistent with the views previously expressed that the rents were too low. Councillor Fuller thought that Mr. Gilmer should be met by the council. Councillor Wright eaid the position was a serious one. Ho did not think tho rent was too high. For another section in Cuba-street, not nearly so valuable, the rental was £1000. The recommendation was referred back.
