'A DUNEDIN PROSECUTION. (Br TELEGRAPH— fRBSS ASSOCIATION.) DDNEDIN, 26th May. T\\i' hearing of the charge of being a bookmaker preferred against Frederick Matthews recently, was continued in the Police Court to-day. The police contended that the defendant, who made a bet with Daniel M'Laren, who was alleged to be a bookmaker, was a principal instead of a bettor. To-day the police asked for an amendment of the information so as to constitute an offence as under : — That Daniel M'Laren, on sth March, at Dunedin, being a bookmaker, did bet on licensed premises to wit, the Grand Hotel, and that Frederick Matthews did assist in the commission of the offence. Mr. Hanlon, for the defendant, objected, but the Magistrate, Mr. Widdowson. allowed the alteration. After the hearing of evidence the Magistrate reserved his decision.
