BACK FROM EGYPT
♦ Mr. John. Harlow, formerly of Lower Hutt, who went on (a trip to tho Old Country fifteen months ago, has returned to New Zealand. For six months alter th© outbreak of tho war he was in Egypt, and saw tho Australia-n and New Zealand troops undergoing their training for active service. In the course of conversation with a Post reporter Mr. Harlow said tho hospital at Alexandria, was bnilt by tho Germans; it was splendidly equipped, and had now been taken over by tho British. It contained about 250 beds. The casino, known as San. Stefa.no, had also been taken over aa a hospital, It contained about 700 beds. Some 15,000 Jews,, ho added, had been expelled from Jerusalem by the Turks, and their plight was piti- j able. They were brought over to Egypt by two American warships, tho Tennesseo and St. Carolina, and the people of Alexandria gave them all the assistance in their power. Some of thorn had been wealthy, now they were in dire poverty, having been robbed of everything they possessed. Every German in Egypt and every native who was the subject of suspicion h*d been deported to Malta. Christian Syrians had been taken by the Turks for their army, and all who were in possession of sufficient funds were buying themselves off. That cost about £43, and many had bought thomselves off three times. Those who could not afford to do so were not, as a rule, semt to the front; they were usually given labouring work to do.
