GRIMLY STRUGGLING

FOR THE ROAD TO CALAIS pi ■ GERMAN ATTACKS REPELLED MARKED BY DESPERATE FIGHTING EXPECTED TO ACT SIMULTANEOUSLY

Despite what a correspondent in Norlli France describes as appalling losses, the Germans have not relinquished their offensive, but are grimly struggling for possession of the road to Calais. AH their attacks have so far, however, been repulsed. Yesterday's messages stated that the enemy had claimed successes in • both the eastern and western theatres of war, but military critics in England are inclined to believe that these stories are only intended^to influence 0 Italy at a critical moment. Desperate fighting marks the operations in Galicia and the Carpathians. On Sunday — the message comes from a place in Hungary — the Russians occupied several points of highly strategical importance. The Germans, amongst other things, claim to haA r e c,ut off Libau, in the Baltic, and expect to capture Riga without much opposition. . There has been heavy fighting between the Turks and the Russians in the Caucasus, resulting in the complete defeat of the Ottoman troops, who are now being pursued. Although it is reported that the' war spirit in Italy is much in evidence, there is nothing to indicate immediate intervention. Rumania is expected to act simultaneously with Italy.
