Winter. June 3 and s— Dunedin J.C. Winter. Juno 3 and 4— Otaki Maori K.C. Winter. June 3, G, and 7— A.R.C. Great Northern Steeplechase. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Sir Lancelot.") The Kilroney— Madder filly in C. Pritchard's stable has been named Rose Pink. She belongs to the same family as All Red, Sea, Pink, and Rose Madder. Bimeter and Downham have been going to do something all the season, but until Saturday last the pair named had only won one race this season. Both have got close to the four-figure winners, Downham having won £985 in stakes, and Bimetev £980. The time for the H&wkes Bay Cup appearing in the Hawkes Bay and Wellington papers, 2min 32 3-ssec, was incorrect-. The official time was 2min 35sec. This is a second slower than j Lady Moutoa's record for the race. Tho last time they met, on the concluding day of the Grand National Meeting, in the Sydenhym Hurdles, Morecambe conceded Hereford a stone and ten pounds and beat him five lengths. "St. Clements has not many representatives on the Turf now, but Gladiole and Zion each won a double at Awapuni this Season. Gladiole added £540 to her owner's account, which is more than the previous season, when she went through without a win. The owner of Gladiole was lucky to meet Emperador in the Palmerston North Stakes when he was not- half ready, although the writer heard W. Young blamed for not winning. It is usual to blame the rider when a favourite gets defeated. C. Emerson was blamed for Waretep's defeat in the Awapuni Gold Cup, when she had no chance of defeating Chortle as the race, was run on the clay, and when Emerson scored on the latter in the Hawkes Bay Cup, O'Shea was thought not to make enough use of Balboa. Bercola, who recently returned from Australia, has been engaged in the Great Northern Steeplechase. It was not intended to take Byron to Blenheim, bnt he did a good gallop at Awapuni, and his owner decided to send him across. A. J. Shearsby started as a trainer at Blenheim with the steeplechaser Orient in tho old days. Sauci has been engaged in the Century Hurdles at Wanganui. It is reported The Pole is to join Tim Doolan at Cauhield. The Pole was produced in a flat race on Saturday at Hastings. (This season he has won on the flat, qver hurdles, and across country. He would bo a useful horse for junipers' flat races in Victoria. Mr. J. S. M'Leod, of Hastings, who made several purchases at the Sydney yearling sales, returned last week,' and was present at the Hawkes Bay Meeting. Fagot, winner of the (Longlands Hack Handicap at Hastings, is by San Reno, the St. Leger horse sold to New South Wales, from Martyrfeldt. Gi Jones re* cently sold a half-brother by Multifid to Fagot to R. Longley, tho Riccarton trainer, . With the large increase offering in, handicap and weight-for-'ago events this season, Warstep,' Reputation (three-year-olds), and Desert- Gold' (two-year-old) have broken all previous stake-winning records. F. Meagher got badly bruised about the face when San Pan fell with him at Hastings on Friday. The most likely-looking hurdler seen out at Hastings was the four-year-old Vascular, who carries the Karamu colours. He was only seen out On the first day, and was pulled up after hitting a hurdle in front of the stand and nearly losing his rider. Vascular is by Vasco from Pellicle (Birkenhead — Film), a full-sister to Kairoma. He will make his next appearance in the Great North- j em Hurdles, at Ellerslie. W. Adams rodo Bollinvand Vascular at Hastings, and will ride the Karamu jumpers this winter. Sir James Carroll was among_ the visitors at the Hawkes Bay Meeting, also Starter A. Wood, who has sold his place at the Park, and intends to reside in Christchurch in future. I R. J. Mason has engaged Emper- ; ador, Bimeter, and Banksia at the Wanganui Meeting. Merry Roe, Bonny Helen, 'and other performers are in. The nominations represent better class than usual. In the Marlborough Cup, Rene (8.5) has the same weight as she won with in the spring at the same course. Peroneal, who ran second, now meets Rene oh 171b better terms. Mr. W. Kain, the South Island owner, now resides in Hawkes Bay. He has the jumpers Sportsman and Royal Medal in T. Lloyd's stable at Marton. G. Jones informed me at Hastings that he may take Chortle, Multiply, and Multiplication to tho Otaki Maori Meeting. Sensitive, who should have won the Karamu Hurdles on the second day of the Hawkes Bay Meeting but for a mix-up at the last fence, is a five-year-old gelding by Sensation — Turquoise mare. Ho won a hack handicap at Waipukurau on Easter Monday, and is trained by S. Lindsay. Mr. "Narelle" journeyed over from Wanganui to see Spain run at Hastings. She did best on the second day, when she ran second to Three. Spain is trained by K. Quinlivan, who won with Allen Doone. The three-year-old Allen Doone (Birkenhead—Rain), who was supported to win the Thompson Handicap, has struck form rather late in the season. At Waipukurau he won the Easter Handicap, beating Cervulus and Birkful (both of whom have since won a double), and later in the afternoon he ran second to Golden Sky in the -Flying Handicap. At Hastings Allen 'Doone scored in decisive manner in the Autumn Handicap, and. on Saturday acted os runner-up in the Burke Memorial. Word comes from Blenheim to-day that Dceley is suffering from a slight touch of .pneumonia ond will not ride at the Marlborough Meeting.
