AMATEUR ATHLETICS SATURDAY'S CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING.

(By "Sprinter.") It will be remembered that the writer raised the point as to -whether the slide would be allowed in the pole vault at the coming meeting. On being referred to on the matter the referee (Mr. W. F. Larkin) stated that he would rule the device out. Competitors will therfore be all on the same level in the matter. It is understood that Mr. Larkin J s ruling is based on thy precedent created at the last Australasian championship meeting at Melbourne, where the referee ruled out the slide. Yesterday there were but three entries for the walks, and all of these Wellington representatives. A further entry has now come to hand from Canterbury — David Wilson, for the mile walk. The name is reminiscent of one of New Zealand's greatest walkers— Dave Wilson, of Aifckland — but no information is to hand as to whether the Canterbury representative is identical with the veteran. Should it turn out so, the public may look for a good race. De Rago and another member of the Canterbury team are nt present with the Expeditionary Force at Trentham. The training they are getting may help them considerably at the finish of their races on Saturday. A medal for each of them would make a fitting souvenir of the Dominion. • On Saturday the N.Z. Shield will be competed for between the various provinces. Points are counted only for first and second places, the allotment being — five for first and two for second. At present the shield is held by Wellington, and as the province will be represented by a strong team on Saturday it looks as if the trophy may remain here. A surprise may, however, be effected by Canterbury, and Otago and Southland will certainly cut into _tho points. The Queensland medal won by New Zealand in Brisbane is now awarded annually to the province gaining most points for records and standards. The council is busy tracing this trophy at the present time, and hopes to have it here for Saturday. >
