MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Included among the persons charged with drunkenness at to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court was Herbert Wynn Williams, who was convicted yesterday, when he was .given time in which to pay the fine imposed. When he pleaded guilty before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., this morning, he said he was sorry, but had • been unwell during his stay in the city. He was fined £3, in default fourteen days in gaol, and a prohibition order was issued against him. "Will you give me time to pay?" he asked. "No, the police will help you," came the reply. Six first offenders charged with drunkenness received the usual light treatment, while another — a woman — was remanded for medical attention. Alexander Churchman wa* fined £2 (or fourteen days' harH labour), and* George Oonroy £1, or three days' imprisonment. Alexander Baker was deemed to be a rogue and a vagabond, because he was found by night sleeping in a shed at the Mount Cook Girls' School. He was sent to gaol for one month. Said to be a first offender, Stephen Dourick pleaded guilty to the theft of 41b of bacon and a bottle of pickles from a shop in the city. He took advantage of the temporary absence of the owner. "I will give you a chance of keeping out of gaol," said Mr. Cooper, "by fining you £1." For deserting from the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Orari, Constantine Charnbiras was sentenced to one month's imprisonment.
