WOMEN'S LABOUR BUREAU

In the February report of the Women's Employment Branch of the Labour Department the following applications are recorded as received from employers : — Day workers 64, domestic workers 44, housemaids 14, chambermaid 1, lady helps 6, cooks 6, waitresses 4, matron 1, housekeepers 2, hop-pickers 96 ; total, 238. Applications from employe« 6 were as follow : — Day workers 37, domestic workers 11, lady help I, housemaids 5, cooks 4, waitresses 5. pantrymaid 1, housekeepers 3, upholsteress 1. In addition 100 women and girls applied for work as hop-pickers in the Nelson and Motueka districts. A large proportion^ had previous experience, and whilst' 93 applicants were actually assisted to the work, 38 of the total too_k,.up engagements with growers by whom' they- hsfd been previously employed, and were not specially selected by the Department. In order to facilitate the transport of' this large body of womenfolk a special daylight trip was arranged, and 112 piokers were taken across at reduced fares. Arrangements made by growers for distribution of the workers on arrival were very satisfactory, and within an hour from the time of landing all members of the party had arrived at, or were on their way to, the gardens. ,The engagements made during the month totalled 118, which included 35 day workers, 55 hop-pickers, 11 domestic workers, 5 housemaids, 4 cooks, and 4 waitresses.
