SHODDY FOOTWEAR
Soddy footwear, by the Footwear Regulation Act of last session, may not be offered for sale unless plainly branded with the name of the materials othei' than leather used in its manufacture. Regulations under the Act having been gazetted, the Labour Department has been > charged with the duty of their enforcement. There is power under the Customs Acts to prohibit the importation of shoddy articles; but the Labour Department's inspectors will direct their attention mainly to* seeing that no shoddy boots and shoes are offered for sale in shops unless' branded. They have authority also * to inspect factories and see that nothing but genuine leather is used in local manufacture. It is nojL however, anticipated that any New Zealand manufacturer will be found to be imposing oh the public. Still, the duty of seeing that shop-keepers' sell only genuine leather boots as such will mean extra work, and it is expected that extra inspectors will be appointed to assist the present officers of the Labour Department.
